Annapolis was an amazing town, but it was time to move on and up the Chesapeake River to the beginning of the C&D Canal. We departed at 6:30 a.m. It was a gorgeous morning with flat water, 70 degrees and sunshine with a bit of haze. This is our forth day of North Bound travel and it feels really good. At 7:30 a.m. we crossed the 39th Parallel, only 6 to go.
Our destination of Schaeffer’s in Chesapeake City, MD. and is about seven miles into the canal from the west.
Debris coming down the bay was an issue to watch for. But the birds sure seemed to appreciate it.
There isn’t anything at Schaeffer’s except their restaurant and a place to tie up along a long face dock with very swift current. We arrived at 12:19 and of course, we came in at mid-tide with full current to a fixed dock and two (I would say) somewhat inexperienced dock hands. But it turned out okay.
Schaeffer’s Restaurant ran the entire length of the dock with outside dinning and live music. We had dinner with Kenton and Kathy of Nice Going then went back to Saunter and listened to music for a bit. A couple approached the boat and after talking for a bit they came on board to take a tour. They were very friendly and had lots of stories and questions. After they departed we were ready to calling it a day.
Schaeffer's is a great place to lay over and jump off to Cape May.
I have bike cycled twice along the C&D canal in the last couple years from Chesapeake City to Delaware City. Always wanted to eat at Schaeffer's but after a 29 mile bike ride I just wanted to head home. Glad you had good weather and made it through there safely.
