Today’s trip was fun. First thing in the morning we assisted our rafting buddies unraft from our boats and get on their way. First from Saunter then from Perikana. Saunter was the next to squeeze out right at 7:00 a.m. , followed by Duane and Michelle and then the whole rest of the gang. We were now free from the sardine can we were in over night.
The morning started out a bit foggy but cleared quickly.
Today, Saunter took the lead. A lot of the boats would be traveling to Portsmouth and Tidewater Marina or across the Elizabeth River in Norfolk at Waterside Marina. I said that today was fun because everything went smooth. We had several bridges to contend with and wait on, but the wind and currents were kind today. We had a lock to go through which went without issue (at least for us). One of the boats got turned around in the lock and funny but true the name of the boat is “Changing Course”.
When we entered the Elizabeth River, our surroundings became industrial. So much happens behind the scenes that we don’t stop to think about how things are made, how they get here, how are the resources sourced. It was so interesting. The industrial made way for tourism and cruise ships to the our largest U.S. Navy ship yards.
We arrived Tidewater Marina at 2:00 p.m. It was so hot and humid. For the first time I’m not complaining about the air conditioning. I usually freeze on the boat.
Duane and Michelle joined us aboard Saunter for docktails. They graciously invited us to their boat for dinner, but we still had a lot of prime rib to finish off. The four of us and the three girls (dogs) all went for an evening walk which was at an absolute perfect temperature compared to the afternoon which kept us inside.
After our walk we said goodbye to our new friends, Duane and Michelle, who we know we will be seeing again on the Great Lakes. They will return to Yorktown where they previously spent an extensive amount of time and will reconnect with friends over the next couple of weeks.
My favorite shot of the day was taken by our friends, Duane and Michelle while we held position on the river with 10 other vessels and waited for the Great Bridge to open.
Tidewater Marina in Portsmouth, NC is a nice place to stop with the exception of green area for the girls.
