Underway for Washington, NC at 7:40 a.m. Travel today was on the Neuse, Bay and Pamlico Rivers. Most appeared to be more of a Bay. Land could barely be seen on each side and at times disappeared altogether. Our day was filled with low cloud cover and overcast skies.
Washington is Tina Marie’s home port and we travelled with them for the day (if you consider being on the same river and ½-1 mile apart traveling with someone). As we reached the Pamlico River, I realized that many of the homes are not on stilts but built on ground level. This out of the hurricane and tide areas. Tides here are only brought in and out by wind.
Not to many pictures underway with open water and fog.
Beside his work calls, Glen worked with Garman to correct a couple of issues we have with our displays. One monitor displays our boat as crabbing along the plotted line. Nothing critical, just annoying. It didn't get corrected yet.
We arrived in Washington at 2:00 p.m. We were please at the location and first impressions of the town. After all of the routing arrival tasks we did a walk around town and had to stop at the famous Bill’s Hotdog. They have been around for 90+ years. The menu was hot dog, sausage dog and chili. We ordered three dogs "all the way". Just the way the local ordered ahead of us. The dogs were lightly fried and then put in a bun with white chili, onion and mustard. Pretty good but the chili was a bit spicy.
Thursday night they had a revival meeting in the park by the marina. We went up on the
party deck to listened and watched people. A sailboat named Freya came in and docked beside us. In the transient marinas one of the first things you ask is where are you from and then where are you going. Todd and Susan turned out was from Traverse City, MI. and are a very nice young couple.
Friday afternoon we had tornado warnings from 3-10 p.m. At 4:30 we were clocking 28mph winds. But that didn't stop us from going to dinner at Two Rivers Ale House. We gave it a 3 out of 5. Mostly our fault. I was hungry for a burger. We sat at
the bar and realized they only served beer and wine and a limited appetizer menu. Glen had beer I had a bottle of wine. In North Carolina you can get the bottle and carry out what you don’t finish. A much better deal. I wish Michigan did that. We ate a nice array of cheese dips with crackers, pitas and pretzels. We went back to the boat and watched the storms move through. The sky looked a bit ominous with beautiful, sunny, black clouds. We were again reminded how thankful we were to be in Washington because the bad weather stayed northeast of us.
Saturday was chill, we biked to Walmart and bought more than would fit in our bike baskets, but we made it work.
Sunday was Mother’s Day. It was hard to be away from my family. The day was cold, grey, windy and rainy. We walked over to a beautiful Methodist Church for their 11:15 service where we were warmly welcomed. Lunch was at the Grubb Brothers following Church. They had the best fried pork skins, with hot pimento cheese on the side. We also had a grilled Caesar salad which was way to much after the pork skins so we saved most of it for dinner.
Monday was still cold and wet, but we still did our walks and play time in the park with the girls. Another trip to Bill’s for lunch hotdogs, this time only mustard and onions. I wound up doing about 5 loads of laundry. The marina facility charges $5.00 and gives you the key to the laundry room. We’ve usually paid about $3.00 per load. I took advantage of the great deal and washed all our linens and everything that could be washed. And it would be homemade pizza for dinner tonight.
Tuesday, I did some CG Auxiliary work and planned out our next weeks itinerary, assuming this storm would allow us to leave on Thursday, May 12th as planned. We had dinner at Ribeye’s Bar and Restaurant. I finally got the burger I had been craving and I wasn’t disappointed. Best cheeseburger ever. Literally!
Wednesday, we hung out on the boat most of the day, took a walk through some of the historic homes and then people watched.
All week we watched the weather system and were thankful to be in Washington, NC. For the entire week. This was an exceptional marina and the city workers who attended to the marina and transients were fun, kind, courteous, and helpful. We were expecting mail to be delivered prior to leaving but it didn't and we left without it. To be continued. . . .
